KZN Fisherfolk advocates against oil and gas exploration off east coast
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Fishing communities on the KZN south coast have voiced their concern over new oil and gas exploration projects - saying they pose a lifelong threat to marine life off the east coast

Sasol and Italian oil company [Eni] - were given the go-ahead to explore for oil and gas, along the provincial coastline, by the government earlier this year.
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, KZN Subsistence Fisherfolk Forum and the Umkomaas/Aliwal Shoal Fishing Forum campaigned against the drilling project on the shores of Scottsburgh yesterday.
The No oil, no gas campaign started 3 weeks ago - where they aim to take the awareness of the ocean to every coastline.

The Alliance's Desmond D'sa explains their concerns:
"We demand that the ordinary people have a say in the democratisation of the ocean, have a say in, as far as our marine life is concerned."

"What is their plan to create economic development in our country? We want the country to move away from fossil fuel which the whole world has been calling for and stop destroying our oceans."
'We support healthy oceans and the majority of our people rely on the ocean for recreation, job creation, and to survive."
