KZN farmers feel R114m from govt too little

Some KwaZulu-Natal farmers believe the R114-million relief funding from the the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in KZN is just a drop in the ocean, considering the damage already caused by the severe drought.

The funds are meant to benefit subsistence and small-scale farmers as well as commercial farmers.

Funds will go towards livestock and water harvesting, scooping of dams, the rehabilitation of boreholes and the de-worming of livestock.

Farmers should begin receiving assistance within a week.

Mandala Buthelezi from the African Farmers Association of SA says the reports they have received from across KZN are alarming.

He feels more money is needed, but any financial assistance will be helpful.

"The money that the department has raised really sounds like a lot of money but I can tell you that this won't be enough at this point in time unless we receive rains," he said.
