MH370: KZN family praised for possible debris find
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Australian authorities have praised a KZN family for reporting the piece of debris they found while on holiday in Mozambique to the authorities.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and South Africa's Civil Aviation Authority are currently making arrangements to have the part recovered for analysis. It is suspected it could be a part belonging to the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 that disappeared two years ago with 239 people on board.
The part was picked up on a beach by 18 year-old Liam Lotter of Wartburg. He says he only realised it could be an important piece of evidence after seeing recent reports about another find in Mozambique. Joe Hattley of the Australian Transport Bureau says as ordinary members of the public it would have been easy for the Lotter family to write off the debris as a piece of rubbish.
"We have a 1 000 piece jigsaw puzzle and we only have seven pieces of the puzzle. We have very little information to help to locate this aircraft," he said.
"The search area is based on satellite communication signals, so there is very little information. Every piece that we get is important because that is an extra piece of the puzzle to help us solve this mystery," Hattley said.
