KZN Edu's name cleared of irregular PPE expenditure says MEC
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
KZN Education says it's not true that the department spent more than it should have last year when it procured PPEs for schools.

It's been unpacking the findings of an audit report that accused officials of failing to negotiate a better deal when purchasing Covid-19 essentials.
Provincial Treasury delved into the PPE expenditure for four months from March.
MEC Kwazi Mshengu says the department's name has been cleared.
"The finding indicated that the department spent over R400 million in procuring the delivery in PPEs. The report says had the department if did not communicate the prices and paid at the maximum price, the expenditure would have increased to over R800 million.

Reacting to this, the DA's Dr Imraan Keeka. He says the party wants proof to see whether the department really paid market-related prices. " The HOD of the department defended the very high prices in June 2020 and this while giving a presentation on those prices.
"It is clear that the MEC forgot the findings from the SIU. This is evident from his attempt to manoeuvre around the fact that higher than market-related prices were paid."
