KwaZulu-Natal Education has welcomed the sentence handed down to a Midlands school pupil who hijacked, assaulted and tried to kill a teacher.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced the learner to 17-years behind bars on November 25.
The department says the Grade 9 pupil was a student at Chibelihle Combined School in Impendle.

He waved down the teacher, who was on her way to work, and dragged her out of her car before trying to run her over.
KZN Education Department spokesperson, Kwazi Mthethwa says they are fed up with violence in schools.
He says they will continue to work with police to try to rid schools of hooligans hiding behind uniforms.
"The said perpetrator will be isolated from the school and society. We not only protect learners but will also protect teachers."
"The MEC in KwaZulu-Natal in September launched the school safety campaign and presented 1 500 safety volunteers who were then distributed in various schools in KwaZulu-Natal to ensure that our schools are safe," he said.
