The message has been doing the rounds on Whatsapp and other social media platforms. It states that students will be offered registration and tuition fees, meals and accommodation.

Education spokesperson, Kwazi Mthethwa says the advert was not taken out by the department.

He's urged students not to respond to the advert, saying they need to be aware of the increasing number of cyber fraudsters who prey on the desperate.

"We do have our internal controller. We will be checking with our ICT unit to try and establish how it came about," he said.

Mthethwa says should there be any scholarships on offer - they will communicate this officially.

"The Department of Education has an official website where we do issue circulars whenever we do have legitimate programmes and programmes for the entire citizenry of KZN," Mthethwa said.

Education authorities are further advising students and parents to verify the authenticity of all information purporting to be from the department.
