KZN Education to transfer pupils from dilapidated Nongoma school
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
KZN Education has cleared the air regarding its future plans
for the rural Emagcekeni primary school in Nongoma, northern KZN.

This was after the department got word about a KZN man who walked from Pietermaritzburg to Nongoma last month to raise funds to rebuild the classrooms at the school.
Siyanda Dlamini was moved when he saw the state of the mud classrooms at the remote rural school-prompting him to start the campaign "Build It Nongoma".
The department says the rural school is a classic example of the situations they inherited from the apartheid years, where pupils were forced to receive their education under trees, and learn in inappropriate buildings made out of mud and asbestos.

The department has since deployed mobile classes while they transfer the pupils to another school nearby.
Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the transfer is the best solution as more residents are moving out of the area.
"There's no need to rebuild that school because 2km away there's a school that can accommodate the learners from Emagcekeni, which is 80 learners.
"We have decided to provide transport for them to take them to the other school which is properly staffed with educators, unlike their school."
