KZN drug tragedy: Education HOD visits victim's family
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The 19-year-old Zeph Dhlomo Secondary School pupil who died after taking Mercedes, a variation of the ecstasy drug, two weeks ago will be laid to rest on Saturday.
KZN Education HOD Nkosinathi Sishi had planned to visit 32 others who were also admitted to various hospitals after taking the same drug, but found that they had already been discharged.
While visiting the late Siyabonga Ngidi's family in KwaMashu's K-Section, Sishi told journalists that the department hasn't done enough to fight drugs in schools.
"As the Department of Education, we have a huge war against drug abuse and usage by all, particularly young people," he said.
Sishi says the corporate sector as well as communities need to assist the department in the war against drugs. He however says it’s the youth that needs to be at the forefront.
"We want to appeal to young people to organise themselves. Not to organise themselves such that they only fight against drug abuse but to focus on school and education" he said.
