KZN Drought: uMhlathuze reservoirs running dry

With the rainy season almost over, it's not looking good for the city of uMhlathuze whose near-empty reservoirs have seen Richards Bay and Empangeni without water since this weekend.

Municipal spokesperson Mdu Ncalance says their technicians are trying to get some reservoirs to reach at least 30% in levels so that they can restore water supply to areas which have been without the precious resource since Saturday.

"What we have experienced in the last week and the weekend in particular is low levels in our reservoirs - we don't have water.

"uMhlathuze Water, which is our main supply, has reduced us to level four which is 40% of supply in the whole city of uMhlathuze, including industries and residential areas. The situation which is terribly bad," he said.

A number of schools in the region have also complained about the amount of water being supplied saying it's too little while others say tankers have not been provided at all.

Ncalane is urging affected schools to contact the municipality so the problems can be resolved.
