KZN drought: Farming community welcomes allocated R872m
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A commercial farmer in Vryheid says provincial government's announcement of R872-million for water projects in the current financial year comes at a time where communities are fast losing hope.
Premier Senzo Mchunu yesterday said the money is being used towards the Hazelmere and Smithfield Dams while progress has been made with the larger water schemes, such as Greater Mthonjaneni Phase 2, the Lower Tugela Scheme and the Western and Northern aqueducts in eThekwini.

Chief Douglas Zondo says the financial injection is what communities have been praying for since the drought began.
"It will help here and there, truly speaking. As I'm talking now, we need rain because it's completely dry. It's bad. We are only planting sugar beans so [those funds] can help us a lot," he said.
