KZN dept clamps down on exam cheating

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni says she is confident that this year's matric exams will not be marred by irregularities.

Last year, a total of 2 089 pupils in KZN were implicated in cheating during the grade 12 final exams.
Nkonyeni this morning visited three schools in KwaMashu and one in Newlands East as more than 200 000 learners across the province sat down to write their English Paper One.
Nkonyeni says the department has measures in place to ensure there is no cheating or any other irregularity.
She says they are hoping for an 83% pass rate for KZN.
"Of course we're targeting 100%. We're saying 83% will be our baseline because we declared a bounce back strategy at the beginning of the year. We wanted to perform such that we obtain what we managed to achieve in 2013.
"So, from 69,7% we're bouncing back to where we were," she said.
