Two Chatsworth constables were nabbed for allegedly confiscating cigarettes worth R14 500 and R2000 cash from a tuck shop.

SAPS spokesperson Jay Naicker says the 32 and 36-year-olds allegedly failed to take the evidence to the police station.

It is alleged that on 7 June 2020 they entered a tuckshop in Moorton and demanded to search the premises.

They seized cigarettes and  cash before leaving the premises.

The items seized were not handed in at the police station. They will appear at the Chatsworth Magistrates Court tomorrow on corruption and robbery charges.

Naicker says the officer and three other men allegedly accused a tuck shop owner of selling cigarettes.

"They demanded cash from him and R500-00 was handed over to them. They then proceeded to another tuckshop in the area where members of the community members confronted them," he said.

The suspects abandoned their motor vehicle and fled on foot however, one of them was apprehended by the community and handed over to Mpumalanga police.

Provincial Commissioner Khombinkosi Jula's reacted to the arrests by telling corrupt cops they'll will be dealt with.
