The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says it has taken all warnings and alerts seriously.

Officials say they have put plans in place to assist any people who might have been affected by the severe conditions.

Strong winds and heavy rain began falling yesterday - while some snowfall was also reported in the Berg.

COGTA's Lennox Mabaso says residents in coastal and low-lying areas are at the greatest risk.

"We are on alert - we will be ready to react. First and foremost, the best form of prevention in any given situation is for a person to know their surroundings, to be alert and to know what to do and not to take unnecessary risks that may eventually become disasters," Mabaso said.

Meanwhile, the SA Weather Service's Julius Mahlangu says they expect similar conditions to continue throughout the day.

"Going towards midday into the afternoon - we will then start to see a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers along the coastal areas. Otherwise, a 30% chance of rain is expected," he said.
