The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says it's pleased with how the process of swearing in new councillors and office bearers is progressing across the province.

The ANC's Zandile Gumede was elected as eThekwini mayor after securing 124 out of 214 votes while the DA's candidate, Zakhele Mcwango received 87 votes on Tuesday.

Spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says the department is happy despite some challenges.

He says only the Jozini Municipality in northern KZN has not sworn in its councillors.

He's hopeful this will be done tomorrow.

"There was a deadlock on two occasions because of the equal vote for the speaker for both political parties that are contesting the municipality," he said.

Mayisela says there have also been challenges in the Nquthu Local Municipality. He says officials are assessing whether there were irregularities when reconstituting the council.
