KZN averages 3 000 new COVID-19 cases daily: Zikalala

Premier, Sihle Zikalala says KwaZulu-Natal is recording an average of 3 000 cases of COVID-19 a day.

Zikalala says the province registered some 20 000 infections - over the past week - making up 27% of the country's cases. 


"A week ago, we had 40 045 positive cases. Of which as of yesterday (Saturday) KwaZulu-Natal has had 60 602 positive cases. 


"Our daily COVID-19 positive cases are peaking at a faster rate. We have entered a daily average of over 3 000 infections. This, therefore, means that in just one week, we have  had 20 557 new COVID-19 cases."  


Sikalala updated the province on the coronavirus crisis on Sunday.  


KZN's confirmed over 64 000 cases, 614 deaths and 21 000 recoveries.

Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize said he expects KZN to become the province with the second-highest number of cases, after Gauteng


The Premier says so far, eThekwini and Umgungundlovu have contributed the most to the KZN's COVID-19 surge. 


"In eThekwini all wards have recorded infections and continue to record infections on a daily bases, but the worst [hit areas are]: Umlazi, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Chatsworth, Inanda, Newtown, Tongaat, Pinetown and Westville.

"In Umgungundlovu Umsunduzi all wards are affected that also includes Mpofana especially Townville, Mkhambathini (Maqongqo) and Richmond."
