The Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in KZN has decided that those members facing criminal charges must step aside from their positions at party and government level and appear before the Integrity Commission.

This also includes the party's Deputy Chairperson, Mike Mabuyakhulu - who's facing fraud and money laundering charges.

The PEC held an urgent meeting this morning.

Provincial Secretary, Mdumiseni Ntuli says the decision was taken following the debate and outrage that was sparked by Gumede's deployment to the Legislature.

"During the period leading to the appearance before the Integrity Commission, such comrades are not permitted or allowed to stand for or represent the African National Congress,” Ntuli said.

Ntuli says the commission will now need to take swift action.

“The Provincial Integrity Commission will be expected to ensure that they discharge their responsibilities within the shortest reasonable period of time, so that the matter can ultimately come before the Provincial Executive Committee,” Ntuli said.

“The Provincial Executive Committee mandated a Provincial Chairperson and the Provincial Secretary to engage with the National Executive Committee later today and request them to develop a clear guideline on how to deal with cases of comrades who are implicated in one form or another, in some scandals that have a potential to tarnish the image of the ANC,” he added.
