KZN 5G towers "linked to COVID-19" destroyed
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala says the destruction of 5G towers due to misinformation is costing the province's telecommunications sector.
Zikalala was speaking during a 5G webinar yesterday with MECs, and a group of experts on what effect 5G has on COVID-19 following conspiracy theories linking the two.
He also inspected telecommunication infrastructure as townships in KZN have fallen victim to the vandalization of 5G towers including areas in Umalzi, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu and Inanda.
Zikalala warns that the destruction of the towers will be treated as an act of criminality.
"Viruses cannot travel through radio waves or mobile networks. Anyone who says otherwise is not only reckless but also seeks to arrest our development as a province and a country", he said.
Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu has expressed worry that the 5G myths have caused people to delay testing and getting treatment for Covid-19.
"It is very important we get these technological developments because they will improve our connectivity in rural areas where we have our biggest challenges. This has meant people are reluctant and are presenting themselves late at our health facilities", she said.
