KwaMashu residents block roads in protest

At least 300 residents from KwaMashu, north of Durban, are protesting over service delivery issues.
SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says a man who fired gunshots during the unrest was arrested immediately and will be charged with possession of a unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The police's Thulani Zwane says the demonstration began early this morning, however no damages or injuries have been reported.
Malendela and Ntombela roads have been affected - with residents blocking the roadway with burning tyres.
"At about 4am today we received a complaint that there were people protesting at Malendela Road. Police officers are still at the scene, they are monitoring the situation," Zwane says.
Reports from the scene are that residents want eThekwini Municipality to address their issues over housing.
Update: Gunshots have been fired at the Kwamashu protest this morning.
SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the man was arrested immediately - he will be charged with possession of a unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
"During the protest, one of the protesters produced a firearm and fired shots randomly but no one was injure during this incident."
At least 300 residents have been demonstrating since early this morning.
Zwane says they are from a hostel in the area.
"They were complaining of service delivery in the area. They moved to Malendela road where they protested, blocking the roads and burning tires," he said.
