KwaDukuza to install system to detect illegal electricity connections

KwaDukuza is hoping soon-to-be installed technology will close the gap on the around R100 million in annual revenue it says it loses through illegal electricity connections.

The municipality is acquiring a supervisory and data acquisition system known as SCADA.
Its functions will include detecting load imbalances, illegal connections and other issues on the network.

The municipality says it will also be installing a new control room for its electricity department to accommodate SCADA.
"Currently, KwaDukuza has a manual system that works with a person physically finding a fault, whereas this system is going to tell us you have lost component A that supplies the CBD and that the issue, according of the system, is one, two, three," says spokesperson Sipho Mkhize.
