Kwadukuza Municipality to take action against defaulting ratepayers

KwaDukuza's ratepayer debt is approaching R300 million and the north coast municipality is now considering taking legal action against defaulting citizens and businesses.

Most of the R274 million consumer debt is spread across different categories including rates, electricity, refuse collection and interest.
Municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize says they are now left with no option but to entertain the legal route.
"We are looking at the possibility of handing over our debtors to the new panel of attendees that are dealing with debt collection.

He says Council has appointed service providers to undertake disconnections with the aim of speeding up debt recovery.
