Kwadukuza Municipality considers debt relief for ratepayers hit by lockdown

The KwaDukuza Municipality is considering easing the payment obligations of its financially-hit ratepayers during the lockdown.
It says from assessments - a number of citizens and businesses are experiencing financial constraints due to significantly reduced economic activity.
Spokesperson, Sipho Mkhize, says the relief plan is being mooted and if it goes ahead - there'll be criteria.

"Normally whenever we have debt relief schemes you will pay in the region 40% or 30% of your principal debt so you can be considered," he said.
"So the local Command Council is currently taking a proposal of 15% to the council to say if they want too participate in the scheme - pay us 15% of your principal debt so we can get onto other payment arrangments," he added.
