KwaDukuza Mayor: Communities must refrain from actions undermining freedom
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
KwaDukuza Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu, says KZN communities must use their freedom to reflect on the achievements and sacrifices made in order to obtain it.
He addressed thousands who gathered at Kokstad for Freedom Day celebrations yesterday. Mthembu says for the local community freedom today has also meant the ability to participate in the economic sphere.
"If people get jobs, this makes things easier for everyone, because there are some who think government is not doing anything to help. So our response is that the president of the country is moving around lobbying investors to come invest in our country so we can have more jobs", he said.
Mthembu says such freedom must be exercised responsibly and says this means communities must avoid engaging in actions that could be seen to undermine that freedom.
"When more and more communities burn tyres and barricade roads over services investors see this and are discouraged from investing in our country and look elsewhere", Mthembu said.
"People must learn to engage leaders so that their grievances are addressed without the unrests such as blocking roads", he said.
