The announcement comes almost a week after the successful synchronisation last Thursday.

The highly anticipated development means four generating units of the power station are now connected to the grid.

It is expected to contribute an additional 800MW to the grid once it is fully optimised in the next six months.

Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says the milestone will help address the country’s supply capacity challenges.

“This achievement signifies the relentless efforts from the team in ensuring that the power station project is completed without any further delays, which would help strengthen South Africa’s electricity capacity,” says Bheki Nxumalo, Group Executive for the Capital division.

According to Eskom, the construction and commissioning activities on the remaining units 5 and 6 continue to progress according to plan.

At completion, the station situated near eMalahleni in Mpumalanga will consist of six units and will produce a maximum 4 800MW.
