Krejcir fails in bid to postpone sentencing

Radovan Krejcir has had yet another application turned down by the South Gauteng High Court.

The Czech fugitive had asked the court to postpone his sentencing proceedings until tomorrow so he can arrange to have a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a doctor and a criminologist to come and give evidence in mitigation of sentence.
Krejcir told the court today that he has a mental illness, whose medical term he does not know, and that he is depressed and feels helpless due to being in solitary confinement.
The State opposed the application, saying the witnesses should have been in court today.
Judge Colin Lamont has explained why he could not grant the application.
"The accused has had ample opportunity to arrange for all witnesses to be here. And so far as each of their specialities is concerned, he is able to and can give lay evidence as to what condition affects and worries him insofar as his medical condition is concerned and insofar as a criminologist is concerned.
"He is able to supply such data as he may wish concerning his personal circumstances," he said.
Krejcir and his five co-accused Desai Luphondo, Warrant Officers Samuel Modise Maropeng and George Jeff Nthoroane, Jan Lefu Mofokeng and Siboniso Miya were found guilty last year of attempted murder, kidnapping and dealing in drugs.
