Kodwa: SA women's sport teams should earn more than men

Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa says South Africa’s women teams should be paid more than their male counterparts given the recent impressive performances.

Kodwa shared his views during a breakfast event to celebrate Banyana Banyana and the Spar Proteas Netball Team in Sandton.

The women's football team made history by advancing to the last 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup still underway in New Zealand and Australia.

The Netball team placed 6th overall at the World Cup held in Cape Town recently.

Kodwa says companies also need to come on board to help take women's football, netball and other sports to greater heights.

"There are opportunities for commercial partners to assist in moving South Africa's football and netball towards fully professional structures. While government has supported efforts to boost women and use sport development in the country, it cannot do it alone.

"This morning, we had a very cordial and constructive discussion with Red Bull in Cape Town, with Sasol, MTN and many other commercial partners who have also shown enthusiasm to participate in this endeavour to establish professional leagues.

"While football in the country is the most popular sport, netball is the country's most popular women's sport."
