Klaarwater substation trip causes mass outages around Durban

eThekwini Municipality says technicians have begun restoring power after the Klaarwater major substation tripped.

It caused widespread outages across Durban, affecting the central, south and western parts of the city.
The municipality says power will be restored area by area over the next few hours.

Councillor Melanie Brauteseth, who is the DA Whip on Human Settlements and Infrastructure, says she spoke to the electricity department on Monday afternoon trying to find out what had happened.
"They don't have a timeline of how long it's going to take and that it seems to be from the Eskom side. Two of the lines tripped into the the Klaarwater substation."
