King Shaka Airport workers claim unfair dismissal by ACSA

Management at aviation security group, Bosasa, have dismissed claims that some of the employees involved in a labour dispute have been fired.

The workers say they had their permits removed, and were dismissed when they arrived at King Shaka International Airport this morning.

The group is striking over the non-payment of overtime for the past two years.

One of the workers, Sbusiso Majola. says it is unfair.

"It is affecting us a lot because it is an unfair dismissal. In the process of a dismissal there is a sanction for that case - that is diagnosed that if you did something, the sanction is going to be this. So now, if what we did is striking and the sanction is we must be dismissed, or we must be fired. Why were others called back to work? What is it that they did different compared to us?" he said.

Bosasa's Papa Leshabane says the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has the prerogative to revoke permits.

He says workers received text messages this morning - to report to the regional office on Monday where they will be notified of their charges.

"There is a labour relations process in place, that governs how you deal with employees. So simply put, they have not been dismissed," he said.

Leshabane says the late payment for October is being sorted out.

"Seeing that there was a work stoppage before payday - we could not process that payroll, because we needed to go back and recalculate the time worked. So that is what's being done today, and on Monday they will get their full-pay - up until the day they stopped working," he said.
