King Goodwill Zwelithini calls for end to GBV
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu says he’s shocked and appalled by the spate of murders in Mthwalume, on the south coast.
Zwelithini zeroed in on the scourge of gender-based violence at this year's annual reed dance ceremony. Umkhosi woMhlanga was scaled down and number of guests reduced from thousands to 50 in Nongoma.
The ceremony was also held virtually in keeping with COVID-19 regulations.
During his main address yesterday, the King said that violence against women and girls should not be tolerated.
"I want women to rest assured that I am in their corner and commit myself to their safety", he said.
"All this kind of violence does is destroy the image of the Zulu Kingdom, South Africa and Africa at large", the king said.
"This is a war that I, and all those who identify themselves as Zulus, embrace", he said.
