The family of a Tongaat bus driver who was shot and killed in a failed robbery have been left devastated.
Zakhe Gumede was fatally shot while driving along the Watson Highway on the north coast on Friday morning. Gumede’s cousin and family spokesperson, Sam Mkhize, went to the scene of the shooting.
He says the family does not believe the incident was a hit. Mkhize says his cousin never mentioned having any arguments with anyone, leading him to believe the attack was a robbery.
"He asked the gunman 'What money do you want?'; 'Do you want money from the bus or from the tickets?' because it was the end of the month and everyone is paying for tickets," he said.
"The suspect did not respond. He simply took out a gun, shot him and ran off," Mkhize said.
