Khoza condemns pitch invasion, pledges full cooperation to authorities

The Orlando Pirates Football Club says violence is not the answer to poor performances on the pitch.

Loftus pitch invasion

On Saturday, angry Pirates supporters invaded the pitch in the 82nd minute  - when Mamelodi Sundowns made it 6-nil against the Buccaneers at Loftus Versfeld.

A section of Sundowns' supporters then also ran onto the field - with some fights breaking out.

A SAPS Nyala had to drive onto the pitch field to disperse the crowds. The match was stopped for nearly an hour before play could resume.

Orlando Pirates Football Club chairman, Irvin Khoza Khoza, says the club's stance is clear.

"There's no place for violence in our society. There's no time that it is justified. When it happens, we should pause, determine its cause and root it out with no fear or favour. What our position on the perpetrators of Saturday's violence is that our unequivocal, clear, plain and unambiguous position is for the law to take its course," he said.

While condemning the violence, Khoza made it very clear that to protect himself - he could only comment on the weekend's events in his capacity as chairman of the club, and not as chairman of the league.

"If I make any comments, I may be seen to be preempting or influencing the outcome of the tribunal. So I think I must desist and protect myself," he said.

He's pledged his full cooperation to the authorities, and insists the matter rests entirely with the league.
