Kennedy Road Informal settlement issues persist
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The Deputy Public Protector says he's disappointed to see little progress has been made in the provision of basic services to residents of Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban.
Kevin Malunga, accompanied by officials from eThekwini Municipality, visited the area today as part of their investigation into the living conditions of residents there.
One of the people who aired their grievances was 59-year-old Constance Ntshela who's been living there since the 1990s.
"When it rains, water comes through the roof. It comes in and floods the house. What are we meant to do? We might as well be living outside," she says.
Earlier today, Malunga spoke to several residents who complained about the poor living conditions, lack of decent sanitation, electricity and the hazardous environment for raising children.
A 23-year-old mother told of how she lost her young child last month who came into contact with an illegal electricity connection. Others say they're still waiting for materials to rebuild their houses after they burnt down last year. They say action is only taken when elections are around the corner.
