The KZN-based metro was the last to elect a mayor following an aborted session on Monday.

The session descended into chaos after a group dressed in ANC regalia disrupted the meeting.

The council reconvened on Monday amid much uncertainty over who would take the mayoral chain. But it ended up in with the old, in with the old as the ANC’s Mxolisi Kaunda was re-elected.

Kaunda received 113 votes and the DA’s Nicole Graham 104.

Two of the ballots were spoiled.

The council then moved on to the next election.

Philani Mavundla of the Abantu-Batho Congress was nominated by the ANC for the deputy mayor position.

Earlier, the ANC, in a surprise move, announced that it was making a change to its list of candidates for the executive committee.

It said it was replacing the party's Ntokozo Sibiya with Mavundla.
