Kaunda: City working hard to clear beach pollution
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says the city is beefing up its technical teams to help identify the sources of coastal pollution.

He says they are working around the clock to ensure all beaches are open during the festive season and beyond.
Last week, the Institute of Water and Wastewater Technology at the Durban University of Technology flagged six Durban beaches with high E.coli levels.

Speaking at a media briefing at City Hall on Monday morning, Kaunda said the pollution of beaches was caused by various issues, including pump failure, load shedding, vandalism and poor network infrastructure.
"We want to assure our residents and visitors that the city only opens beaches that meet the quality standards for safety.
"As of the 5th of October, we will be collaborating with independent laboratories to conduct water tests on the same spot and release them simultaneously so that we don’t have conflicting results."
