Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The eThekwini Municipality says it has transferred land to 23 churches in the city.
Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda made the announcement during the annual Ecumenical Good Friday Church service at the Durban City Hall.
Kaunda said the land was transferred as part of the government's programme to promote land ownership and security of tenure.
The municipality's Mluleki Mntungwa says the allocation of the land to churches will mainly be in Umlazi, Mpumalanga, Cato Manor and Verulam.
"The city has recently approved the allocation of land to 23 churches within the eThekwini Municipality.
“eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has further committed the municipality to allocate worship sites to churches because we strongly believe that if churches are allocated land, they will continue to play a significant role promoting the unity and social cohesion in the city."
