He gave the welcoming address at the Human Settlements Indaba and Exhibition in Durban on Sunday.

Kaunda said the city continues to draw lessons from climate change related events.

Last month, the KZN government and eThekwini Municipality came under heavy criticism from both the auditor-general and Parliament's Flood Disaster Relief and Recovery Committee for the slow response to the April floods.

But Kaunda said they are working flat out to move victims out of community halls and return services to normal.

"We have been able to clear 43 mass centres and people have been moved to decent shelters.

"Two weeks ago, the council took a resolution to facilitate the acquisition of the Monte Claire lodge to accommodate people displaced by floods. We are also expediting our programmes to restore services, especially on water and electricity in the city."

Meanwhile, Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says a review is urgently needed to deal with the backlog in housing provision in the country.
