"Kathrada's wisdom needed now more than ever"

Political heavyweights have joined friends, family and ordinary South Africans to say their final farewell to struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada.
Kathrada is being laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
The anti-apartheid activist criticised the ANC leadership towards the end of his life, going as far as calling on President Jacob Zuma to step down.
"Although he is silent today, Uncle Kathy always made his views known. We may say, even as he lies here today, he refuses to be silent," says Gauteng Premier David Makhura.

Makhura is joined by ANC leaders such Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, as well as former president Thabo Mbeki, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Graca Machel.
President Jacob Zuma's absence made headlines after he confirmed that he would not be attending proceedings in line with the family's wishes.
Makhura told a cheering crowd that we should be outraged when our stalwarts and veterans are insulted.

"Let's ensure that the views and voices of our struggle veterans are heard and respected," said Makhura.
Makhura was followed by SACP President Blade Nzimande, who did not mince his words.
"It's unfortunate that Comrade Kathy leaves at this time when his wisdom is needed even more in our organisation.
"At a time when parasitic patronage networks are today seeking to capture our movement for their narrow interest," said Nzimande.
Kathrada's funeral takes place amid heightened speculation over a possible cabinet reshuffle, which could see Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan axed.
