Kathrada spoke out on several occasions about the current state of the ANC, even going as far as asking President Jacob Zuma to step down.

Mkhize says the ruling party has accepted that he was entitled to his opinion.

"The points he raised were issues that were about the concerns he had around the performance of the organisation and the image of the organisation and the role of leadership. We have taken those comments to heart and we have discussed those issues - not only because he raised him, but because a number of them have been issues that have been raised by our own members," he said.

Mkhize says South Africa has lost a great struggle stalwart.

He says Kathrada was an intellectual giant.

"He would never shy away from debate; very wise, intellectual and a real giant. Our country has lost and we are poorer without him. We shall forever remember him and we shall forever honour his contributions and honour his dedication he showed to our struggle. His love and passion for our country and people will always be an inspiration long after he has gone. Long rest his soul in peace," he said.
