A Malawian court on Wednesday granted South Africa's request for the extradition of self-proclaimed prophet Sheperd Bushiri and his wife, Mary.

The ministry said Interpol and the police will facilitate the process of bringing the couple back to the country if they don't oppose the ruling.

The Bushiri’s fled South Africa in 2020 after they were arrested on multiple charges including rape, fraud, and money laundering.

They were out on bail at the time.

The Justice Ministry's Terrence Manase said they have been told that the Bushiri’s intend on appealing the ruling.

"This case highlight the importance of international co-operation in tackling national crime and ensuring that justice is served," said Manase.

"South Africa remains committed to strengthening its legal and diplomatic partnerships to bring fugitives to justice and maintain fair, credible and effective legal systems."
