JUST IN: Multiple killed in Colenso taxi ambush
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Police are at the scene of an apparent ambush on the R74
between Colenso and Weenen that has left multiple people dead.
Officers say a taxi from Gauteng was returning to Johannesburg when a group of unknown gunmen jumped into the road and opened fire on the vehicle just before 8pm.
Initial indications are that the occupants of the taxi had been returning home from a funeral in the Ematimotolo area.
While details around the shooting remain thin, it is believed there could be as many as 11 fatalities.
Police spokesperson, Jay Naicker could only confirm that there are multiple fatalities on scene and that the crime scene is still active.
“There are multiple fatalities and detectives will only be in a position to confirm the numbers once crime scene experts have combed the area,” said Naicker.
“Unconfirmed information for now indicates that the passengers were from a taxi association in Gauteng and had attended the funeral of one of their members,” he said.
Detectives from the Provincial Task Team in Durban have been dispatched to the scene.
This is a developing story.
