Judgement for Vavi in speeding case
Updated | By News24
Judgment in the case against former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi will start today at the Edenvale Magistrate's Court.
Vavi was arrested on October 4, 2015 for speeding on the R24 in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.
Evidence from one of the traffic officers who apprehended Vavi was that his silver-grey Audi Q7 was first travelling at 178km/h in the 120km/h zone.
The officer said as Vavi changed lanes, his speed increased to 182km/h.
Vavi has pleaded not guilty to the charges of reckless or negligent driving, and speeding.
During the court hearings Vavi's lawyer Paul Jorgensen tore into the State's case. Jorgensen said the court could not accept as evidence the camera which was used to capture his client."Whatever is contained in there has been potentially compromised," said Jorgensen, referring to the device which was placed in front of the court room.
The equipment was never sealed and it had since gone for calibration, meaning that a third party had handled it.
