Janusz Walus placed on parole
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Chris Hani's killer Janusz Walus has been freed after 28 years in prison.
Last month, the Constitutional Court compelled Justice Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola to release him on parole, setting aside an earlier decision refusing him parole.
Correctional Services says Walus was released after being discharged from hospital on Wednesday.
He had been receiving treatment since he was stabbed by a fellow inmate at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria last week.
The department says he will serve two years under community corrections in line with the parole regime and under strict conditions.

It says there is no question that Walus' release has understandably re-opened wounds among some in society, especially Hani's family.
"In placing the offering on parole, Minister Lamola said, 'Our parole system is not a wanton license for unaccountability and impunity. Neither does it nullify the original verdict and sentence imposed by the courts’.
"Parole is an acknowledged part of our correctional system. It has proved to be a vital part of reformative treatment for the paroled person,'" says spokesperson Chrispin Phiri.
