I've got my own shoes to fill: Gigaba
Newly-appointed Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says he will not be making any reckless decisions that will have a negative impact on the economy.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony of ministers and deputy ministers at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, following Friday morning's dramatic cabinet reshuffle by President Jacob Zuma.
Gigaba was controversially moved from Home Affairs to Finance as replacement for Pravin Gordhan.
Gigaba was not one of the five ministers sworn in, but was in attendance.
His deputy, Sfiso Buthelezi was also sworn in.
Gigaba was quizzed by media about his sudden appointment and the shoes he now needs to fill.
"I'm not going to fill anybody's shoes. I've got my own shoes to fill that I'm already wearing," said Gigaba.
He said he understands the responsibility with which he has been entrusted.
"I'm not new to government. I'm an experienced politician with more than 21 years in the NEC of the ANC. I have served as President of the ANC Youth League for eight years. I'm not a newcomer," said Gigaba.
He said it's natural for people to be concerned, but leaders need to manage these fears.
"I understand the gravity of the position with which I have been entrusted. National Treasury is an important position and I will not act in this position in any manner that is going to jeopardise both the integrity of the department as well as the interest of the nation."
