The rugby player was issued a breach notice by Rugby Australia on Monday following a controversial anti-gay post on social media earlier this month.

The sport's body confirmed today that Folau requested a Code of Conduct hearing.

This after Rugby Australia's Integrity Unit deemed that he had committed a high-level breach of the Professional Players' Code of Conduct when he made the controversial social media post.

The unit felt it warranted the termination of his employment contract.

Folau had been given two days to accept the sanction or request the hearing.

Officials will now make arrangements with the Rugby Union Players' Association to bring together the hearing. Once the date has been set, Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union will not comment on the matter until the proceedings have wrapped up.

The issue has seen numerous players, former players, organisations and individuals calling for Folau to be given the boot.

Others who came out in support of the 30-year-old feel he had been exercising his freedom of expression based on his Christian beliefs.

It is not the first time the star player has had a run in with authorities over his social media use.

Folau was warned after making similar homophobic comments last year.
