Isipingo Post Office robber jailed for 12 years

A KwaZulu-Natal man convicted of carrying out an armed robbery at a Post Office in Isipingo has begun serving a 12-year jail sentence.

The Durban Regional Court heard how Ayanda Mthembu, aged 26 and his accomplices stormed the post office and held staff at gunpoint two years ago. 

 

"Mthembu and his accomplices entered a Post Office at gunpoint and assaulted the staff," says Hawks provincial spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo.

"They then took an undisclosed amount of cash and five cell phones. They fled the scene in their getaway vehicle which was later spotted at the Umlazi area."

 

Mhlongo says their getaway vehicle was later spotted in Umlazi. 

 

"A high-speed chase and shootout ensued. Mthembu was injured during the shootout and was taken to hospital under police guard. Mthembu was charged with armed robbery and he appeared in court several times until he was convicted."
