The shooting left a man in his twenties dead.

Investigators say teams from SAPS and Durban Metro held a joint roadblock at the Virginia off-ramp on the M4 on Saturday.

They are said to have watched a bakkie make a U-turn and signalled to the driver to stop.

Ipid's Robbie Raburabu says when he didn't, officers gave chase and gunshots were fired.

A 24-year-old passenger, who was struck in the head, was killed.

Eight other men, who were in the vehicle, weren't hurt.

Raburabu says they are probing the actions of a Metro police officer.

"The Ipid was notified of the incident and they attended the scene. The police allege that they heard gunshots and when the tried to stop the vehicle they ended up shooting at that vehicle. Ipid is investigating charges of murder and attempted murder against police officers that were involved."

No arrests have been made.
