IPID identifies man killed in Wits protest

Police watchdog, IPID, says a 35-year-old bystander who died during an ongoing protest by Wits students was husband and father, Mthokozisi Edwin Ntumba.

He was shot in Braamfontuin allegedly by police who'd been called to quell the SRC-led demonstrations and moments after he'd visited his doctor. 


Wits students have been protesting against financial exclusion this week. 


IPID's begun investigating Ntumba's death. 


Spokesperson, Ndileka Cola says they're processing numerous pieces of evidence, along with witness statements. 


"It is alleged that a 35-year-old man, Mthokozisi Edwin Ntumba, a civilian, a husband and a father of a toddler was not part of the student protest."

"The Directorate has managed to confiscate firearms, and they will be taken for ballistic analysis. The postmorterm to determine the actual cause of death will be conducted this week."


Police Minister Bheki Cele is currently at the home of Ntumba's family in Kempton Park. Higher Education's Blade Nzimande is set to brief the country later today. 


Meanwhile, five students are expected to appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court this morning on a charge of public violence for their alleged role in the Wits protests.
