Investigation report released on 'appalling' matric camps in Harry Gwala
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
Education officials believed to have been responsible for leaving matric pupils to study in appalling conditions at a camp in Harry Gwala district will face disciplinary action.
Images of the state of the matric camp at the Boniwe Rehabilitation Centre surfaced on social media.
They showed learners in an overcrowded tent with no masks.
The ablution facilities were overflowing.
Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu released the findings of an investigation in Durban a short while ago.
"That camp was known not to be suitable for hosting the matric camps but the district continued to use it."
"Secondly, there was a school that was available to be used with boarding facilities but the district looked away and clearly wanted to appoint the Boniwe Rehabilitation Centre."
"Boniwe Rehabilitation Centre quoted the total amount of R1 260 000.00 and the District Director acted beyond her delegated authority to approve Boniwe Rehabilitation Centre and therefore splitting of the quotation was done intentionally," he adds.
