Durban metro police have given their side of the story after a video emerged showing what appears to be their officers loading a minibus with goods looted in the CBD on Sunday night.

Police can be seen loading a metro minibus with what appears to be cooler boxes and alcohol, among other items.

Spokesperson Parbhoo Sewpersad says an investigation has been launched.

But he believes the items were confiscated from looters who were arrested.

"All matters of this nature will be investigated. One must also understand that when you arrest a suspect, you will have to gather the evidence or take the evidence with you to the police station to effect the arrest and detain the suspect.

"The chain of evidence has to be taken into consideration and I can confirm there's lots of evidence lying at Durban Central SAPS some of it is still lying in our police vans which we will enter into their registers which is called the SAPS 13. All of this information that is being sent to us will be fully investigated."
