Insurance expert issues open house warning
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
An insurance expert is encouraging homeowners who are putting their houses on the market to make sure they know what they are and are not covered for.
The advice follows recent CCTV footage of two men entering a house that had been on show pretending to be prospective buyers.
The duo then went on to pinch valuables from one of the bedrooms.
CEO of MUA Insurance Acceptances, Christelle Colman says homeowners face an increased risk on open house day.
She says most insurance policies for home contents don't cover the theft of valuables if there is no sign of forced entry.
"If you pay less, you normally get less. So don't think 'I'm saving R100 on my insurance a month' but at the same time you've got a massive excess or no insurance cover when there's a specific incident.
"Nothing in life is for free. So if you get something for less, you end up with a sacrifice of some kind along the way," she said.
Last year's crime statistics showed house robberies went up 5.2% from the previous year.
Recent CCTV footage captured a theft which took place while a house was on show to potential buyers.
This highlights the importance for homeowners in the process of selling their house to ensure that their belongings are properly insured against theft which may occur during an open house day. Watch the video below:
