The legalisation of marijuana for medical purposes may soon become a reality in South Africa, after the Department of Health announced yesterday that it was forging ahead with plans to recognise the drug as a prescription drug. The department says it will publish guidelines by the end of this year.

The following countries have implemented laws to allow for the sale and purchase of cannabis and cannabis-related products - for use in the treatment and management of chronic and terminal health conditions:
